The Marriage Debate

Informal discourse given by
Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj

Today three devotees received sannyasa initiation from Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj (pictures). This sound file is an informal talk given at end of last year where Srila Govinda Maharaj describes a topical story of a debate between Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj and a cousin.

Subject summary:

  • A senior, twenty-two year old cousin of Srila Guru Maharaj guarded the mother and new child at the time of Srila Guru Maharaj's appearance. At that time in Hapaniya there were jackals, tigers, wolves, etc.
  • When Srila Guru Maharaj grew up, these two had a debate, the cousin being in favour of marriage, but Srila Guru Maharaj was not in favour.
  • The foundation of Srila Guru Maharaj's side of the debate was 'to every action is an equal and opposite reaction,' so if you are the cause of the birth of others, you must take birth again.
  • That cousin had three sons, one in particular was very qualified and courageous, but he had one bad habit: drink. Finally he died from drink.
  • That cousin's dear wife also died, and his other sons were not in favour of their father.
  • When Srila Guru Maharaj heard the news of the wife's death, he said that we can go there to give him some nourishment. We accompanied Srila Guru Maharaj and saw the courtesy of that man.
  • At that time the cousin mentioned their debate long ago about marriage and non-marriage. He commented, "Now I am thinking non-marriage is good, that you were right and I was wrong.... After getting the result, now I understand."
  • Ramanuja Acharyya's wife was anti-Vaishnava, similarly Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's wife was like that.
  • Sridhar Swami (the great commentator of Srimad-Bhagavatam) also was very sad after marriage. His wife passed away while their son was only six months old. He wanted to take sannyasa but could not.
